Southern Spain

One Week

For this itinerary, we opted to rent a car for one week, which allowed us to explore some of the most beautiful cities in Southern Spain. We booked roundtrip flights through Malaga, a cultural hub filled with historical sites, beautiful beaches, and incredible food.

This itinerary includes Malaga, Ronda, Seville, & Cordoba. If you have additional time, I highly recommend adding Granada to your route.

Day One: Malaga

  • We flew out Friday evening and landed in Malaga Saturday evening.

    • We drove straight to our hotel and prepared for a full day.

    • We stayed at the Atarazanas Málaga Boutique Hotel

      • Walking distance to most attractions, great breakfast, comfortable rooms with scenic views.

Day Two: Caminito Del Rey

  • Malaga Sites:

    • After breakfast, we walked around the city and
      visited the following sites:

      • Malaga Cathedral: Built between 1528 and 1782.
Nicknamed La Manquita which means “one-armed
lady”. The name comes from the fact that to this
day it is still unfinished. The south tower has never been completed. It’s still incredible and a must-see in Malaga.

      • The Alcazaba: A fortress built between 1057 and 1063 by the Muslims, one of the most visited and iconic monuments in Malaga.

      • Gibralfaro Castle: Built-in the 14th century, this is a great spot to see breathtaking views of the city. It’s located up on a hill built to protect the Alcazaba and to keep an eye on the city.

    • If you have additional time, you can also stop by the Roman Theater; It’s the oldest monument in Malaga, located at the foot of the Alcazaba, discovered in 1951 after being buried for many centuries.

    • We were lucky and got to watch the Easter day parade so we cut our site-seeing short.

  • Caminito Del Rey Hike:

    • Drive one hour to the Caminito Del Rey Hike (book reservation ahead of time)

      • The whole hike takes about 2 hours and is not very strenuous.

        • Tickets are about 10 Euros/ person for regular entry and 18 Euros for a guided tour.

        • Make sure to give yourself enough time to find parking

  • Ronda:

    • After the hike, we grabbed an early dinner before driving 1 hour to Ronda, my favorite town in our itinerary!

    • Walk around the beautiful city, grab a glass of wine, or simply relax at the hotel.

Day Three: Ronda

  • Ronda Sites:

    • This town is so fun to walk around and explore!

      • Take the Paseo Blas Infante to the edge of the cliff for the Ronda viewpoint

      • See the Plaza Museo bull ring

      • Casa De San Juan Bosco

      • Enjoy authentic tapas for lunch

      • We spent some time relaxing by our hotel pool

Day Four: Ronda- Seville

  • Decide how much more time you want to spend in Ronda. Then, drive 1 hour 45 minutes to Seville.

    • We spent the next two days in Seville, roaming around the city and taking in some of their most beautiful sights. Make sure to spend some time looking through the different tile shops! We were lucky enough to find a gorgeous pieces of tile from the 14th century that is now one of our favorite pieces of artwork in our house.

    • We stayed in an airbnb in this city, which was fine, but I would highly recommend staying near the Catedral de Sevilla. We stayed on the other side of the Guadalquivir River, which was a pretty long haul to most of the sites.

  • Seville Sites:

    • Plaza de Espana

    • Local Shopes/ Dinner

    • Metropol Parasol,  also called  “Las Setas”

    • Drinks

Day Five: Seville

  • Seville Sites:

    • Alcázar of Seville (palace and filming location in Game of Thrones)

      • Buy tickets in advance- about $40/ person.

        • You have to  select a certain time slot

      • Likely to sell out

    • Seville Cathedral (largest cathedral in the world)

      • climb the Giralda bell tower

      • Buy tickets in advance (they offer group tickets for this & the Alcazar)

    • Palacio de las Duenas and the Casa de Pilatos

      • The house was beautiful, but I wouldn't say this is a "must do" if you're looking for a more relaxed day.

Day Six: Seville-Cordoba

  • Enjoy a relaxing morning in Seville before driving
    1.5 hours to Cordoba

  • Cordoba Sites:

    • Most of the sites are located in the same area, so we were able
to see everything in one day. This allowed us to spend some
time wandering the beautiful streets on day two.

    • Arabian Baths Experience at Cordoba’s Hammam Al Ándalus

      • This is an absolute must! We booked a 9:00 pm time slot, which was the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

      • We opted to just go through the bath cycle, but you can also book a massage if you want an additional service.

      • Bookings open from 10 AM- 12 AM

Day Seven: Cordoba- Malaga

  • Enjoy a relaxing morning in Cordoba before driving 1.5 hours to Malaga

    • We opted for a relaxing morning filled with food and shops, but there are plenty of additional sites to his in Cordoba.

  • Additional Cordoba Sites:

  • Malaga: Beachfront Hotel Near Airport

    • We ended our trip at a 4-star beachfront hotel,
      Sol Guadalmar.

      • The property was beautiful and the airport is only a
        10-minute drive from the hotel.
